Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) is the pioneer development forum on Africa led by the government of Japan since 1993 and co-hosted by United Nations, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Bank and African Union Commission (AUC). The 7th summit will be held on 28th - 30th August, 2019 in Yokohama city, Japan.  

UNDP co-organizes an official side event in a partnership with Kanagawa prefecture to examine the power of multi-sectoral partnership that accelerates the achievement of SDGs in Africa and Japan, through facilitation of profound discussion on various leading cases of promoting localization and fostering innovation for the SDGs.

The event will provide participants with opportunities for mutual learning between Africa and Japan and forging vibrant partnerships.

  2. Opening session “Unleashing the power of localization through multi-sector partnerships to achieve the SDGs”

    • - Mr. Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator
      Over nearly three decades, Mr. Steiner has been a global leader on sustainable development, climate resilience and international cooperation. Mr. Steiner has served across the United Nations system, looking at global challenges from both a humanitarian and a development perspective. He led the United Nations Environment Programme (2006 2016).
    • - Mr. Yuji Kuroiwa, Governor of Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
      Mr. Kuroiwa took office in 2011. Kanagawa is nationally selected as an advanced prefecture in promoting SDGs. Calling for local governments’ leadership, he issued the Declaration on SDGs JAPAN MODEL gaining support by over 140 local authorities. He conveyed his policy and the Declaration to the world in the SDGs High level Political Forum at UNHQs.
    • - Ms. Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor of Banjul, Gambia
      Ms. Lowe was born and raised in Banjul, Gambia, where she is presently the first female mayor. During her years in Sweden, she had the opportunity to serve on a Child Welfare Committee. As the Mayor, one of her priorities is to ensure that the youth and women of Banjul are empowered through skills and entrepreneurship training.

    • - Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu, CEO, Tony Elumelu Foundation (Nigeria)
      Ms. Ugochukwu is a lawyer and the CEO of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, the first of any African to hold this position.Her responsibilities include overall development and implementation of the foundation’s initiatives. She is the driving force behind the record breaking selection of entrepreneurs in 2019 for the US$100m TEF Entrepreneurship Program.
    • - Ms. Patu Ndango Fen, Closed-Loop System Ventures (Cameroon)
      Ms.Ndango is a zero waste activist and circular economy strategist. She is the founder of Closed Loop System Ventures, a social enterprise which turns waste into valuable consumer goods and a co founder and President of CLSV Foundation, a non profit organization with aims to reduce the amount of waste in open dumpsites and landfills.
    • - Dr. Shamim Nabuuma Kaliisa, Founder, CHIL A.I Lab (Uganda)
      Dr.Kaliisa is a founder of Chil Artificial Intelligence Lab and finalist CChub /Google Pitch Drive Tour, which is to build partnerships across Asia for 10 African deep tech and hardware startups. She is also Elumelu Entrepreneurship Program Alumni 2018 and Winner of the Awief Social Impact Award.
    • - Mr. Riki Kitagawa, Co-Founder/CEO, WOTA Corp, Japan
      Mr. Kitagawa has studied water related topics throughout his academic career. He has knowledge of many areas relatingto the topic from water treatment technology to water supply and sanitation. He was awarded the Master’s Thesis Awardfor his research on financial problems surrounding water supply in an age of decreasing population.
    • - Mr. Mitsuru Izumo, Founder & CEO of Euglena Corp., Japan
      Mr. Izumo is a founder and CEO of euglena Co., Ltd., the world’s first biotechnology company that succeeded in the outdoor mass cultivation of microalgae Euglena for food use. Following successful business growth, Company launched “euglena GENKI program” in 2014 which distributed Euglena contained biscuits to Bangladesh children.
    • - Mr. Hiro Nishiguchi, Executive Managing Director, Japan Innovation Network
      Mr.Nishiguchi manages an open innovation platform co founded with UNDP, SDGs Holistic Innovation Platform (SHIP),which aims to achieve the SDGs with private sector resources and technologies. He promotes innovation in large and medium sized corporations, as well as collaboration with innovation hubs and start ups globally.
